I needed daycare and I needed a shower. My new mom friends invited me to take spin classes with them, but between the coaches shouting out mysterious numbers and the coordination involved, I kindly declined; spin was more than my foggy-mom brain could handle at the time, so I stuck to my elliptical, yoga, and Zumba classes. This pre-dated the Soul Cycle invasion of New York, before cadence and tap-backs became part of the everyday jargon. By the time my son learned to love the gym, I was pregnant with baby 2. Luckily, my little girl eased into daycare and I soon realized after taking my first spin class that I had been missing out: At this same time, the condo I lived in had redesigned its gym, and I convinced management to add a spin bike.

Replica made from the alleged Caprotti sketch. There are several early but unverified claims for the invention of the bicycle. The earliest comes from a sketch said to be from and attributed to Gian Giacomo Caprotti , a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci. In Hans-Erhard Lessing described this as a purposeful fraud. Augusto Marinoni, a lexicographer and philologist, who was entrusted by the Commissione Vinciana of Rome with the transcription of Leonardo’s Codex Atlanticus.

Above, Punnett Companion, below close-up of the badge. Rochester, NY There were several ways to fashion a bicycle built for two, but the Punnett, with a pair of frames, side-by-side attached to a pair of in-line wheels, was one of the more unlikely ones. The rear axle had a sprocket on either side, each powered by a corresponding chain, front sprocket, and pedals. If this seemed like difficult cycling and balancing the Punnett with two riders was no easy task there was another option: This was not entirely comfortable, but it was considered practical in getting the machine to and from the abode of the wheelman’s lady friend.
It is rumored, that this bicycle belonged to the actor Steve McQueen, however, we have nothing to substantiate that. It is possible, McQueen had a collection of “About motorcyles, over 55 cars, five airplanes, and over ten thousand miscellaneous items. This began to turn around in the camera and electronics industries in the s, but Japanese companies didn’t figure out how to make and sell bicycles for the U. As the s opened, the U. While Japanese bicycles were manufactured to very tight tolerances, and nicely finished considerably better than their European competition , the Japanese had not yet come to terms with the average American’s being taller and heavier than the average Japanese. The first means of transport making use of two wheels arranged consecutively, and thus the archetype of the bicycle, was the German draisine dating back to The term bicycle was coined in France in the s, and the descriptive title “penny farthing”, used to describe.
Contact The History of the Folding Bike There have been many who have laid claim to the invention of the folding bike. Humorously, a bike manufacturer who shall remain nameless so as to not unduly embarrass them audaciously claims on their website to have produced the world’s first folding bike in Wishful thinking by their marketing department I suppose.
The truth is that the folding bike has been around for considerably longer than one might imagine and most claims of being the first are erroneous. First things first though, you can’t have a folding bike without the invention of the bicycle itself. So a very short history lesson on the bicycle is in order. Here again we have some disputed claims of invention and historians will probably never be able to identify the exact moment of invention. For a while some had claimed that Leonardo Da Vinci invented the bicycle based on a sketch found in his Codex Atlanticus.
However, this sketch was later determined to be a forgery, though many historical accounts written before this forgery was discovered still credit Da Vinci as the inventor of the bicycle. There were a few “pre-bicycles” invented before the appearance of what one would recognize as a bicycle. The first of these was probably the “Celerifere” developed by a French count named Mede de Sivrac in It consisted of two wheels connected by a beam and was decorated to look like a horse or a lion.
There was no steering mechanism or pedals and it was basically a whimsical novelty meant to entertain the idle rich.

After purchasing the bike a few months ago, I disassembled it, assessed its frame and components, and then re-built it as a city commuter, to reflect the kind of riding I currently enjoy. The frame was free of rust, and in unusually nice condition for its age. This Centurion Semi Pro had been upgraded at original purchase to Shimano Dura Ace components and a 27″ tubular wheelset.

How to Identify a Schwinn Bicycle
The head tubes look as if they were fillet brazed , but they weren’t. The head tube and the tapered segments that lead into the the top tube and down tube were actually made from two special forgings that were “electro-forged” welded together down the centerline, then ground smooth, so the seam is not usually visible. There are necked-down parts that fit into the top tube and down tube, like internal lugs. Muller has a very detailed explanation of this process, in his superb article: Inside the Varsity , which is now on this site.
Dating these bikes is usually the first step toward proper appraisal of a vintage Schwinn machine. Find the serial number. Upon production, all Schwinns had a serial number stamped in one of three places on the frame. The first possible location is on the underside of the bottom bracket.
Locating the Serial Number – Chicago built Schwinn serial numbers are found on the left rear axle-hanger or fork-end on the frame. If letters were used for date codes, they skipped the letters “I” and “O” as they looked too much like numbers. This scheme is for all Chicago built non-Paramount models excluding Superiors and Super Sports whose serial numbers are located on the left rear axle hanger and consist of a single letter code for the month [again, skip"I” and"O”], the last digit of the year and a 3-digit sequential build number — e.
The Super Sports with Huret dropouts seem to have used a two digit year ‘C ‘ — March, , th frame. The Le Tour and Super Le Tour models had their serial numbers on the left rear axle hanger and many began with an ‘S’, followed by the Japan Made numbering system. The number will have a production month letter in either the first or second position and a production year number in the other first or second position.
Beginning in the s, many Schwinns feature a 4-digit stamp on the head badge that represents the assembly date and consists of the Julian day and the last digit of the year decodes to the th day of or — use decals and components to determine the decade. The Julian dating was adopted for Schwinn’s domestic production in See the 4-digit date code next to the “I”? This was used to connect the remainder of a production run that spilled over into January of the next year.
X should be Month X and Year 9. But it might be Month January of Year 0. Using this logic, Y might actually have been made in February of , but was a part of the production run.
History of the bicycle
Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made. Of course, all this assumes the bike has the original component.
