Understand[ edit ] A dragon marking the boundary of the City Although greater London grew from this area, the official City of London itself has barely changed its borders in centuries and still follows the line of the old city walls to a great degree. The walls around the city, built by the Romans, have largely disappeared but several vestiges are still visible notably outside the Museum of London; just near the Tower of London; and running part of the way down Noble Street and various place names and streets hint at their prior existence.
Locations such as Aldgate, Bishopsgate, Ludgate and Moorgate are the sites of old gates in the city walls. The City of London is not a London borough laws applying to London must define the city as “all London boroughs and the City of London” and has an ancient and unusual local governance, with rights and privileges greater than those of anywhere else in the United Kingdom.
A number of bridges over the River Thames connect the City with Southwark and the two oldest of them, London Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge, are unusual in that the City of London’s boundaries include the whole span of the bridge the border otherwise runs along the middle of the Thames. Small statues of dragons sometimes described as griffins , symbols of the City Corporation, mark the boundary of the City on several roads.

See the 5 day forecast for London at the Met Office The view over the River Thames towards Westminster from the London Eye Despite having a perhaps fair reputation for being unsettled, London enjoys a mild climate on average. As much as one in three days on average will bring rain, though sometimes for only a short period.
In some years, being an example, there was no rain for several weeks. The fact that Londoners would find this remarkable should be an indication to visitors from drier climates of what they may be in for! Extreme weather is rare. Occasionally there may be heavy rain that can bring localised flooding or strong winds that may down trees and damage roofs, but overall you are unlikely to encounter anything too lively. Winter[ edit ] Winter in London is mild compared to nearby continental European cities due to both the presence of the Gulf Stream and the urban heat effect.

The dress is black tie. All serving and retired Fusilier Officers are encouraged to attend what promises to be another splendid evening. As with all projects of this type it is impossible to please all of the people all of the time. There will be those who do not like the design of the memorial, the size the shape and so on. Where I am sure there is common ground is that our Fusiliers who have lost their lives deserve a lasting and fitting memorial at the Arboretum and the small stone that is there currently does need replacing.
An experienced war memorial stonemason has been appointed; he has previously produced work at the National Arboretum and at the Somme and is highly respected for the quality of his work. Meetings have been held with the Arboretum Authorities who have agreed the general size, shape and design of the new memorial. We are still in negotiation with them over whether it can be put into the same location as the current memorial, but early indications are that this is achievable.
An artist’s impression of the new Memorial is shown below. It is made from a single piece of dark grey curved granite which ill be polished. The dimensions will be approx 8 ft wide and 6 ft high.

Tuesday, 16 November A Roman Villa in the Cotswolds These days the Cotswolds, with its rolling landscape, dry stone walls and picture postcard villages, give the impression of being sleepy and sparsely populated, basking or some may say smug in its glory of being one of the jewels of the British countryside. But this is not so. For it is a working landscape with its people going about their daily business, admittedly often in an unhurried way – for our narrow lanes and lack of motorways limit the speed that one can travel.
And often our straightest and, therefore, easiest routes have not been made in recent years but by Roman settlers, attracted to this region some two thousand years ago, for much the same reasons as we are now. Ryknild Street, Fosse Way, Akeman Street, Ermin Way – just their very names conjure up images of Roman legions marching long distances through the country – linked their towns and cities with Corinium, now our modern Cirencester, the centre of both their commerce and entertainment it still has the remains of a Roman ampitheatre that held over people.
And, as time passed, they settled in more remote parts of the Cotswolds too: The track that leads you to the remains is as straight as any other Roman road but was used solely by servants and traders, the owners and visitors arriving by a more grand approach no longer visible. Now cared for the nation by English Heritage, admission is free and the site is open all year.
